If you are one of them, how do you make the most out of your small outdoor green space? With the right tools and strategies, you’ll find the possibilities are endless.

“When people move to smaller homes, they want to make the most of the green space they have,” says Ashton Ritchie, lawn expert and master gardener for Scotts. “They still want that outdoor retreat after a stressful day.”

Ritchie says that smaller yards can be some of the most stunning because they require less time and homeowners can focus more on what they really enjoy. “The difference is with a small green space, it’s not an overwhelming full-time job. I’ve seen many beautiful small yards with intensive gardening and great landscaping.”

Here are Ritchie’s tips for getting the most out of small outdoor green spaces:

1. Make it your own.
If you want to create an outdoor retreat, a small yard holds many possibilities. Your priority should be deciding how you are going to use your yard. If you enjoy cooking, have much of your space dedicated to a great vegetable and herb garden. If you want to use your space to unwind at the end of the day, create an outdoor room with relaxation elements. If you plan to use your small yard as an additional space for entertainment, incorporate sitting space and tables for overflow from the house.

2. Use contrast to your advantage.
The nice thing about a small lawn is the contrast you can easily achieve in the foliage. Lush green grass is the foundation that contrasts with the colors and textures of other plants. Keep your lawn vibrant and consider planting flowers, shrubbery or an herb garden. The contrast in these elements provides as visual frame that is very appealing.

3. Fertilize for a green and beautiful lawn.
Green grass provides us with a soothing, relaxing feeling. But the No. 1 problem with grass is it ends up malnourished and starves. Therefore it’s important to fertilize four to five times a year so you get strong root and top growth.

People with small yards don’t want to bother with bulky bags of fertilizer and storage of a spreader. Scotts Turf Builder with Built-in Spreader is a great new solution. The handheld, all-in-one container is simple to use — simply flip the spout, tilt and shake onto your lawn. The fertilizer strengthens the lawn and promotes a healthy root system. It feeds a lawn up to 1,000 square feet. If you finish and have extra, the small container is easy to store for use next time.

4. Outdoor decor adds appeal.
Consider adding elements to your yard that interject your personal style. For example, adding a water feature is a great idea that is visually appealing plus it adds a water sound that creates a relaxing atmosphere. You could also add a bird feeding station to attract wildlife. If room is very limited, consider a small hummingbird feeder. Be creative and get ideas from your local gardening center.

5. Use space-saving furniture.
Small spaces do not call for big and bulky outdoor furniture. Benches can be a good option because they seat multiple people and also take up less space. Look for pieces that are multifunctional like a bench or table that also opens up to provide storage space. Finally, make sure furniture can withstand temperatures all year long since it probably won’t be stored in a different location.

Small yards can provide big beauty with these tips and strategies. Visit www.Scotts.com where you can read Ashton Ritchie’s blog and get other ideas for maximizing small green spaces.

When custom homebuilder Scott Gregory decided it was time to put a deck on his lake cottage, he did what many builders do when they have the chance to work on their own property: He tried some new things. The result is an amazing outdoor living space with multiple levels, designated purpose areas, built-in seating, curves and innovative use of color.

His goal with his deck? To create a space his family and their guests could enjoy, while also perfecting innovative building techniques that he can incorporate into the outdoor spaces he builds for his clients.

The National Association of Homebuilders says trends in outdoor living continue to grow. It’s a niche that doesn’t look to be going away any time soon, with outdoor living areas remaining a major draw for home buyers and existing home owners.

Gregory’s summer home, located on White Lake in Whitehall, Mich., gets a lot of action during the summer. His family includes young children, and he and his wife often entertain at the cottage. Many of their most frequent visitors just happen to have large families, so having 12 to 15 people around over a weekend is common.

The bar area, made of composite decking, is just one of the unique features on this one-of-a-kind deck.

Because he wanted an expansive space for outdoor living, Gregory took the time to really think about how the space would be used and to plan for enough space for everyone.

He wanted separate areas for cooking, eating, sunning and partying. He also wanted to make sure the materials he used would be low maintenance, slip resistant and splinter free, since tiny feet often ran across the deck on their way in and out of the water.

In addition, harsh winters in Michigan can wreak havoc on anything outdoors. Through the years, Gregory learned that cedar and treated lumber often require yearly maintenance after being exposed to severe cold and moisture. Although he has built many cedar decks, he recently switched allegiances to man-made materials that offer lower maintenance and more variety in appearance.

For his own deck, Gregory wanted to visually separate the spaces. And with over 1,600 square feet of decking spread out over five different levels, composite materials allowed him the variety to do that. Gregory chose to use Latitudes Composite Decking from Universal Forest Products, a composite decking product made from a combination of recycled plastics and wood.

What Latitudes allowed him to do was to mix and match different colors, hide the fasteners on the underside of the deck and create interesting curves for seating, built-in planter boxes and other custom details.

“I’ve always wanted to experiment with curves on a deck, but oftentimes the homes I build for my clients have to conform to neighborhood conventions or a homeowner’s relatively conservative vision,” says Gregory. “With my own deck I had the opportunity to test the materials and see just how versatile they could be.”

Not only was Gregory able to incorporate twists and curves, but he also infused his deck with a nautical star inlay — a compass rose that accents the main deck area and creates a focal point attracting his guests’ attention.

“We’ve created a deck that accommodates a lot of people and several different purposes. We have a hot tub and sunning area, a grilling area that is near the kitchen, a bar area perched high up so that adults can keep an eye on kids and water activities, an eating area and a cozy fire pit for enjoying the chill of a Michigan evening,” he says.

Through his business, Scott Gregory Custom Homes, Gregory finds his outdoor living projects to be among the most enjoyable. It’s a growing part of his business, particularly as homeowners take advantage of low interest rates and a huge variety of innovative products for use in creating comfortable outdoor living areas.

“Outdoor stuff is fun to build. Not only does it offer an opportunity for creativity, but it adds true value to an existing home and my clients just love it,” he says. “More and more of the custom homes I build take into account large outdoor living areas. When we first started 20 years ago, we would build relatively small decks on the back side of homes. Today we are adding expansive decks and patio spaces that literally wrap a home with added living space. New building materials make it possible to be creative, and products like Latitudes are incredibly versatile for work of this type.”

(NC)-Modern hot tubs come in many different shapes, sizes, materials and with a huge range of options. By evaluating your own wants and needs before buying, you can ensure your hot tub will deliver the years of enjoyment you expect from it.

A hot tub is a great addition to either the inside or the outside of a home. A tub located on an outdoor patio will allow bathers to enjoy the fresh air, while an indoor tub will protect them from the elements. By deciding which location works best for you and your lifestyle, you reduce options to a more manageable level, cutting down on shopping time.

Depending on local climate, predicted usage in the winter months and personal preference, homeowners may consider housing their outdoor tub in an enclosed gazebo or choosing an indoor option. While soaking in an outdoor tub on a starry winter night is an exhilarating experience, exiting the tub into sub zero temperatures can be a bit chilling for some.

Most hot tubs sold in Canada today are designed for year-round use. They are fully insulated to retain heat and most maintain high levels of energy efficiency. When paired with a quality cover, outdoor tubs are kept warm and ready to use within minutes of turning them on, even in the winter.

To choose the style of hot tub best for you, speak to a qualified dealer in your area. You can locate one using the Pool & Hot Tub Council of Canada’s member directory at www.poolcouncil.ca, or by calling (800) 879-7066.

In less than a month the season begins, and if you want your home to gain a reputation of being “the place” to enjoy the game, now is the time to start getting ready.A good place to start is by stocking up on supplies: disposable cups, plates, napkins, serving trays and utensils; soda and bottled water; chips and pretzels; and all the right gear to cheer on your team. You’ll also have to decide where everyone will gather to watch the big game, keeping in mind, as long as the weather is nice, the “best place in the house” won’t be in the house at all, but in your outdoor living room.According to the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), extending the footprint of your home by creating living space outside is one of the hottest trends in home remodeling right now. Gone are the days when all you had outside was some patio furniture.

These days, people’s backyards have all the comforts of home — a relaxing place to sit, electrical connections for televisions and stereos and a refrigerator where snacks and drinks can be stored. People are also putting in outdoor ovens that do double duty, not only providing a place to cook brats and burgers, but on those upcoming cold winter days, warmth as well.

If you don’t have a barbeque oven yet, but want to create an outdoor living space in time for football season, start by deciding where it should go, then invite some friends over to help you build one. Here’s how:

Required tools:
Plasterer’s trowel
Four (4) wooden posts (2×4s)
Optional: sill plate

Directions:
1. Map out area for concrete footing with wooden posts and secure them in the ground. Lay a level bed of Sakrete All-Purpose gravel and pack it even. Pour a concrete footing about four to six inches thick. Let the slab cure for 24 to 48 hours before beginning to lay the brick.
2. Begin building walls with a layer of Sakrete Type N Mortar between the footing and the first layer of brick. You should begin at the corners and work inward. Check after each layer with a level to make sure your finished product will be level.
3. When the structure is 2/3 of its scheduled height, place a row of bricks protruding to the inside to create a ridge for the metal grate (purchased at your local hardware store) to rest on, then do it again several layers up to create enough space between grates for charcoal.
4. Once the barbeque walls are complete, to install a sill plate to provide a means to set and anchor the roof or floor joists. The sill plate is also anchored with bolts into the block cells filled with Portland cement grout.
5. Place metal grates inside grill and fill the lower with the charcoal.
6. Enjoy!

For more detailed directions on constructing a slab footing and laying block and brick for your barbeque, log on to www.sakrete.com and click on the link that says “Take Me to the Sakrete Project Center.” Sakrete products are available at your local hardware and building supply retailer.

Once the barbeque is built, take the time to trim back any overgrown vegetation and, of course, mow the lawn the day before your guests are set to arrive so the yard will look neat, tidy and inviting — just like a well-manicured football field. Sit back, crack open your favorite beverage and listen to your friends talk about your house being the entertainment mecca.

Products to beautify the inside of your home come in styles as varied as your imagination. It’s no surprise then that today, there is also an endless array of options for putting the finishing touch on your lawn, garden, patio, deck or dock.

The surge in popularity of outdoor living space has brought many new options in decking and decorative railings, outdoor lighting and other design accents. A new category of “exterior designers” are creating distinctive outdoor living areas for their clients, and manufacturers are quick to oblige with options.

Chelsey Gardner, an outdoor design expert and owner of Creative Curb Appeal in Dallas, says she tells her clients to start with a trip to the home improvement store.

“The big retailers are a great place to get basic ideas. Since the selection the stores carry is just the tip of the iceberg, if you want something a little different, just stop by the special order desk to see what other options are out there,” she says.

Retail experts say that home improvement stores are great at identifying products that will appeal to the masses. Many of the suppliers whose products line the shelves at the biggest retailers also have dozens of other lines and products to choose from. Usually you can order them right at the store or have them shipped direct from the manufacturer by shopping online.

For example, take outdoor lighting and post cap manufacturer Maine Ornamental. You will find several different post caps and outdoor lights made by the company on the shelves at the big retailers. But Rick Preble, the company’s president, says they actually make more than 300 different post caps and dozens of solar lights.

“You can see our biggest selling products at retail stores everywhere, but if you visit the special order desk or our Web site at www.postcaps.com, you’ll find hundreds of products to choose from,” Preble says.

This year, Maine Ornamental introduced a large line of solar-lighted post caps. Although the most popular style — a classic, copper-topped post cap with a solar- powered light — is a Lowe’s exclusive, there are dozens more you won’t find on any retail shelves.

Tiffany-style glass post caps are available in two different sizes with a variety of different woods and composite materials available. Three different design options, with or without lights, mean there are literally dozens of custom options you can create for your own deck or fence.

“Outdoor lighting has become a big market. It beautifies your home and landscape and enhances special features at night,” Preble says.“It lights the pathways and creates security and peace of mind. It can also set a mood. We wanted to get creative with lighting, so we’ve designed styles that offer lots of options, from the simple to the elaborate.”

All of the post caps in the Maine Ornamental lighting collection were designed for easy installation on fences, decks, posts or docks with no need for wiring or electricity. The Convertible Post Cap Lights offer the option of using candles or a solar cell to power long-lasting LED lights.

“With women taking an active role in selecting the products that will go on the outside of their homes, the designs and options for even the smallest of details are getting more elaborate, and custom choices are always welcome,” Gardner says.

Among her favorite new products, also from Maine Ornamental, are the Tiffany-style Glass Rail Accents, which fit vertically into a deck rail to create a stained-glass baluster that coordinates with the Tiffany-style post caps and lights.

The best thing about digging a little deeper with popular manufacturers is that you may just find something unique that will make your backyard distinctive and give it that finishing touch.

Many homeowners wish to turn their backyards into outdoor living spaces, bringing indoor comforts into the fresh outdoor air. Gazebos are uniquely suited to do this by providing a covered retreat that adds distinction to the outdoor living space.

“Gazebos are becoming gathering places away from the home,” says Bruce Cheng of CedarShed Industries. Cheng recognizes added protection from the elements and the benefit of comforts traditionally reserved for homes as the newest trend in gazebo design. “I see gazebos with sliding windows, French doors and electrical hook ups.”

“Gazebos can add tremendous character to outdoor living spaces,” says Paul Mackie, the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association’s “Mr. Cedar.” “When they’re made of high-quality materials like Western Red Cedar, a gazebo can also add a mark of distinction to your entire property that will last for decades.”

Summer is the perfect time to build a gazebo. It can be finished in a weekend, and the design can be as simple or complex as a homeowner desires.

Planning
Planning in advance will save you time and money. The basic gazebo is eight sides with a railing and peaked roof, but designs can vary to fit your living space and preference. Finishing touches such as lattice or a cupola can add further levels of distinction.

Homeowners are presented with three basic options to design and build a gazebo. Talented homeowners can build gazebos themselves with the help of the many how-to books, magazines and Web sites providing step-by-step instructions. Some companies, like CedarShed or Outdoor Living Today, sell pre-fabricated gazebo kits for the homeowner to install. Finally, a professional can be hired to design and build a custom gazebo.

Materials
Western Red Cedar is one of the world’s most durable woods, making it uniquely suited for outdoor use. “Western Red Cedar is historically known to resist decay,” says Cheng. The tree’s natural preservatives resist insect and moisture damages. The natural properties of Western Red Cedar can also lessen a structure’s environmental footprint by eliminating the necessity for chemical pressure treatments.

The wood’s natural beauty makes Western Red Cedar a preferred choice for many gazebo designers. It comes in a variety of visual options with different grades and textures that can be artfully combined with stone or plants.

To create a different, enhanced hue, choose from a wide variety of finishes. Western Red Cedar is free of pitch and resin, making application a simple process. Clear and semi-transparent finishes are very popular, Mackie says, because they maintain the natural beauty of the wood but offer increased protection from the elements. Be sure to test the finish on scrap material or a small, discrete area of the gazebo before application to the entire structure.

Outdoor Living Spaces
A well-designed gazebo forms a seamless transition with the outdoor living space. Defining elements of the outdoor living space, like water or rock, should be incorporated in the design and construction of the gazebo. Western Red Cedar planter boxes are a simple way to dress up a gazebo and incorporate plants already existing in the outdoor living space. Connecting a gazebo to the rest of an outdoor living space will increase its beauty and the design continuity of the space.

Adding a Western Red Cedar gazebo to your outdoor living space is likely easier than you realize. It just takes some planning, the proper materials and an understanding of your outdoor living space. By keeping those things in mind, you can create a covered retreat that adds a mark of distinction to your outdoor living space.

One of the hottest trends among homeowners is to extend a home’s living space to the outdoors. Many homeowners want a refuge from the hectic pace of daily life. Decks can provide a place to relax and enjoy the outdoor setting.

Today’s decks aren’t just your dull rectangular slabs of yesterday. “People are designing decks to fit how they intend to use the space,” says Mike Woods of Sound Cedar. More often, deck designs receive as much careful attention as the home’s interior. Many homeowners are designing decks with increased levels of privacy, further blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Designing and building an outdoor living space that adds a mark of distinction to your home takes some planning, creative thinking and the proper materials.

Layout & Design
Woods recommends asking a few simple questions before you design an outdoor living space. You should ask what the deck will be used for. Consider where items like chairs and tables will go. Think about which views you would like to cover up or preserve. Answers to questions like these will save you time and money.

Layout can be easily determined by dividing the deck into different zones. Some zones, like dining areas, will require extra space. A zone’s function should determine its location. For example, a cooking area should be close to the kitchen, and an area with a great view may be best for sitting.

If you are interested in privacy, consider a simple trellis which allows you to enjoy great views and quiet conversation in private. A trellis decorated with climbing flowers increases the deck’s solitude and beauty.

According to Woods, creating a 3-D model of your deck is a great way to see how it will look when constructed. The Western Red Cedar Lumber Association’s “Deck Designer” (www.wrcla.org/deck_designer) lets you specify the design and materials of your deck. You can then create a 3-D model with design tips and a materials list.

Materials
Homeowners can choose from many natural or synthetic materials when building a deck but Woods believes the only real option is Western Red Cedar. The wood brings an exceptional all-natural look, aroma and character to outdoor living spaces, coupled with outstanding performance and ease of maintenance.

“The durability of Western Red Cedar is outstanding,” says Woods. One of the world’s most durable woods, Western Red Cedar contains natural preservatives that resist moisture, decay and insect damage. Its appearance can be enhanced with the application of stains.

Western Red Cedar is also one of the world’s most naturally beautiful woods. “Western Red Cedar comes in a variety of grades that can add a mark distinction to a home,” says Paul Mackie, the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association’s “Mr. Cedar.” The different grades — from knotty to clear — can be combined to create artistic patterns in a space.

Although Western Red Cedar ages beautifully, applying a finish will maintain the wood’s original appearance. “Many people choose Western Red Cedar for its natural beauty,” Mackie says. “Applying a clear or semi-transparent finish protects the original look, though some people prefer the classic silver gray of well-aged cedar.” No matter what finish you choose, Mackie recommends always testing it on scrap material or a discrete area of the gazebo before applying it to the entire structure.

Environmental Footprint
Building with Western Red Cedar can also lessen a home’s environmental footprint, or total impact on the environment. That’s especially true when it’s compared with synthetic or mineral building products like metal, cement, stucco or plastic that must be extracted from the ground and are not renewable.

“Western Red Cedar is one of the most environmentally friendly building products you can use,” says Mackie. “It’s recyclable, biodegradable and even reusable. It also has a sustainable lifecycle, unlike other products that must be mined or chemically manufactured.”

Final Steps — Construction and Decoration
Keep in mind that your outdoor living space is a transition between your home and yard. Placing some furniture just outside the entrance will ease the transition from inside. Decorating the space with plants seen in the immediate area will help the transition to the yardscape.

(ARA) – For those homeowners looking to add to their living space, improve their lifestyle and increase the resale value of their home, the perfect solution is to extend your living area outdoors through the addition of decks, patios, outdoor kitchens and entertainment areas. The walls between the indoors and outdoors are coming down — and we’re seeing outdoor rooms and living areas that have all the features of indoor kitchens and family rooms.

One of the obvious solutions for increasing your outdoor living space is the development of the area beneath raised decks. Many of them have elaborate stone fireplaces, barbecue fire pits and professional grade kitchen set-ups to create comfortable outdoor settings that they’re using more than the inside of their home.

Of course, the development of a usable, enjoyable space beneath your raised deck requires you to address one problem . . . rain. All of us who have raised decks know that the area beneath it becomes unusable when it rains because the water simply drips down through the decking. That’s why the development of a new, innovative deck drainage system is drawing such rave reviews from homeowners and contractors nationwide.

Unlike other deck drainage systems available on the market, this exciting new system is installed above floor joists, allowing them to remain completely dry and thus protecting the structural integrity of your deck. Just as important is the fact that the above-joist installation ensures a dry environment for the installation of electrical wiring, gas lines and soffits. This means that ceiling fans, lighting, speakers, video electronics and outdoor kitchens can be installed; creating a fully-functional outdoor living room that provides true comfort and protection from the elements.

The real beauty of this system is its simplicity and ease of installation. Comprised of durable 20 ml, UV-protected plastic components, the system can be installed easily on any new or existing deck. Requiring only scissors and a staple gun, homeowners can install the system themselves or use a qualified deck builder. You simply place a downspout below the decking at the end of each bay, and roll out and staple the trough to the top of the joist. The water enters through the decking into the trough, drains to the downspout and then into a gutter (not included). Apply RainEscape Butyl Waterproof Tape for an even faster and cleaner way to insure no leakage — it really is that simple.

This system is built to last because it is not subject to the accumulation of debris or freezing. The RainEscape deck drainage system is also much less expensive than similar systems and is backed by a 20-year limited warranty.

Enhance your outdoor lifestyle while adding value to your home. If you or your deck builder would like more information on the first deck enhancement system that makes sense, contact the professional RainEscape team at (720) 348-1385, or toll free at (877) 348-1385. You can also visit their Web site at www.rainescape.com and e-mail them for free CAD Detail drawings.

When looking at summer home improvements, many times we think about adding an addition to expand our livable space. But building an addition can be inconvenient, costly and take a long time. A new trend with consumers is to add retractable awnings to their home’s exterior.

Awnings can add fun color and stylish design to your home’s character while providing an expandable tool that increases outdoor living space. You can now enjoy the summer weather without the damaging rays that sometimes force us to retreat inside, where costly air conditioning keeps us cool.

“Awnings expand homes by turning decks and patios into added living space, combining the comfort of the indoors with the enjoyment of the outdoors,” says Larry Bedosky, director of marketing for Durasol Awnings and an expert on outdoor design. “Consumers are looking for new ways to create an outdoor sanctuary so they can fully and safely enjoy the season without the costs of a full addition.”

Awnings can add style and flair to your home too. Today’s consumers are no longer satisfied with a set of flimsy patio furniture and a couple potted plants on their decks or patios. Homeowners are demanding outdoor design elements that really echo the personality of their home. And with the wide variety of styles and designs, you’re sure to find one that matches your home’s décor.

For example, Durasol offers a wide variety of style options with over 200 vibrant 100-percent acrylic fabric colors and patterns to compliment any décor. Durasol offers a complete line of solar shading systems designed to meet every shading need. The Durasol SunShelter Series of “lateral arm” awnings are custom-made to suit any home size and style, offering a variety of projection ranges and virtually unlimited widths to meet any space requirement. SunShelter awnings can be mounted on virtually any flat surface or even on a roof — when limited mounting height is available. An optional Drop Valance allows a section of fabric to be lowered from the front bar, providing additional solar protection from early morning and late afternoon sun.

You can customize awnings to fit other needs as well. For example, do you live in a windy region? An optional wind or motion sensor is available that allows awnings to automatically retract when wind speeds reach a predetermined level, preventing awning damage. Do you suffer from intense sun rays? A sun sensor can also be added to allow for automatic operation determined by the sun’s strength. Also, an interior wireless remote control is an option that provides easy-access operation. When not in use, awnings can be easily retracted, safely stored, and will subtly blend in with the exterior beauty of any home.

Additionally, awnings help protect us from the sun’s UV rays, as well as conserve energy by blocking the sun from entering the home through windows, therefore saving the homeowner money on their cooling costs. According to studies conducted by the American Society of Heating and Air Conditioning Engineers, the use of fabric awnings reduce solar heat gain by up to 77 percent — lowering indoor temperatures by up to 20 degrees. Not only do your cooling costs go down, your furniture and carpet are protected from fading.

“Awnings are a simple and easy way to expand living space without all the work of an addition. They allow users to fully enjoy the summer season and their backyards by providing instant shade at the touch of a button,” adds Bedosky. “Match your awning to the style of your choice and enjoy the added value and space it brings to your home.”

When spring rains rinse and refresh the outdoors, decks, patios and everything on them get a bath, too. But, once it’s dry you see the remaining film that stays: dirt, bird droppings, sticky tree sap and buds, and whatever other debris that gets carried in the wind to land on your patio. These outdoor elements and others cause your furniture to stain, discolor and wear out much faster.

Keeping patio furniture looking like new for a long period of time is not difficult. Proper cleaning and maintenance will extend the life of your furniture. Here are some tips to caring for your outdoor patio furniture:

* Wash it with a good cleaner at the beginning of the season and then once a week squirt it off with a hose. Both dirt and chlorine will deteriorate patio furniture.

* When cleaning vinyl patio furniture, never use a harsh brush or bleach. The brush may create pores in the vinyl, damaging it and causing it to lose its shape. Plus, the bleach will deteriorate the vinyl.

* Check to make sure that none of the bolts holding the furniture together are rusty. Replace them if they are, and tighten them thoroughly.

* If the paint on aluminum furniture is in poor condition, rub it gently with a piece of fine steel wool or sandpaper to smooth it out. Next, take some standard car-wash polish to buff the furniture back to its original luster.

* Touch up wrought-iron furniture immediately if bare metal is exposed to prevent rusting. A rust-resistant primer on the spots will help the rust from spreading under the paint.

* Wicker furniture will stay looking its best if it is kept in the shade, as the sun tends to dry it out. If the wicker finish is damaged, bring it back to life by using a permanent marking pen that matches the color to blend away the exposed areas. To give a piece a whole new look, spray paint each piece with outdoor spray paint.

* Don’t forget to clean your glass patio table. Remove the glass top carefully, over the grass (so it doesn’t shatter if you drop it).

* Put furniture away for the winter by covering it with plastic, and storing in a dry basement or garage. If it must be kept outside, cover it with a tarp.

So when you’re ready for the first cleaning of the year, you need something gentle and strong to bring your outdoor investments back to looking like new.

CLR Outdoor Furniture Cleaner safely and effectively cleans furniture, umbrellas, cushions, children’s play equipment, awnings, barbecue grills — all made to withstand the elements, but still need a little help. Outdoor Furniture Cleaner contains UV protectants to protect furniture from fading and discoloration. This special formula is non-abrasive and safe to use on resin, plastic rattan, wicker, wood wrought iron, vinyl, PVC and canvas. It is biodegradable and will not harm flowers and grass.
