Because of the expense of materials and construction, large properties often go without a fence. But there are options that bring fencing down to an affordable level.

A simple post and rail design is inexpensive to build. With fewer materials the cost is lower. It’s also simple enough that anyone can build it without professional help. Hiring it done will still be relatively cheap, though, since the design allows for quick construction.

A post and rail design won’t keep small animals out, but this fence design can still be highly useful. Larger animals like deer and horses can easily be kept at bay. Pedestrians will be much more reluctant to walk onto property that is fenced, even when the large gap makes it easy. Drivers see clearly where the property line is and the opening shows them where the driveway is located.

For those who have a need to keep cattle, sheep or horses penned within or kept outside there are several alternatives. A simple post and wire design is a take-off on the post and rail style. One variation involves laying a top wire that is electrified. The voltage isn’t enough to cause serious harm, but it shocks enough that the animals soon learn to stay back.

Chain link continues to be a popular choice. For very large properties it can cost several thousand dollars to surround the entire perimeter. But many large properties are also bounded by small streams or ponds, hills and other natural terrain that can make the cost affordable.

A variation on the chain link is the fabric mesh fence. Despite the name, they’re not necessarily cloth. Usually made of high grade composites, they’re nonetheless often a cost-effective alternative to traditional chain link fences.

Some are as simple as a plastic diamond that will create a border, provide some privacy and prevent small animals from making their way easily through. While creatures can chew through, they often will simply go away.

Other types are more cloth-like and give complete privacy at a much lower cost than, say, a shoulder-to-shoulder wood fence. They have the additional advantage of decreasing dust for those who live on dirt roads or near an open field. They can help reduce wind damage to gardens, too.

For those with the need, and a higher budget, a full fence is still possible. If it’s possible to sacrifice some sturdiness, a lattice style - like a waffle or cleft - is an option. They’re a familiar sight in gardens where they look like basket weave. A four-foot fence of this type can enclose a couple of acres at a reasonable cost.

Privacy, security and animal control are all possible even for those with a large perimeter and a limited budget. Fencing options today are as broad as your property.

Outside water spigots are one of the most common sources of water leak around the home. Sometimes they only leak when the water is turned on. In more extreme cases they leak all the time, sometimes a small drip, other times a serious flow. But all these problems are easy and inexpensive to repair.

If the spigot only leaks when the valve is turned counter clockwise, it may well be just a worn rubber grommet at the base of the valve stem. Like most rubber washers they eventually get compressed or develop small holes.

That’s easy to fix with a cheap, temporary repair job. Remove the nut that fits onto the spigot in which the stem sits. Grab a foot long length of Teflon plumber’s tape and wrap it around the base of the stem behind the nut. Get the tape in as far as you can and wind it over and over itself. Then tighten the nut to compress the tape back against the washer. That will stop many small leaks.

Be sure to check the other side of the pipe to which the spigot attaches, though. It’s possible to plug up one leak, only to cause the water to find another way out. If there is more than one hole, water will now drip inside the house. Not a good situation.

For more extensive leaks, replacing the sillcock (as it’s called) is generally fairly easy. It may require two people, though - one on the outside of the house and another in the crawlspace where the pipe enters the house.

Shut off the main valve to ensure no water will flow when you remove the old spigot and sillcock.

The sillcock that supports the spigot is usually a 10-12 inch piece of threaded pipe that winds onto a water supply pipe inside the house. It takes only moderate force to unwind it in some cases. For those that have been on a long time, small amounts of oxidation can cause the sillcock to be stuck on firmly.

For those cases, a good pair of vice grips or a pipe wrench can be used on the inside of the sillcock. The threads are usually grooved in front of a nut that is an integrated part of the pipe leading to the outside spigot. Attach the wrench firmly to the ‘nut’ to ensure there’s no slippage. You don’t want to strip the metal smooth.

Give a good yank while keeping the pipe to which it’s attached still. That can be accomplished by using a good pair of wide-jaw pliers gripped and directed in the opposite direction. It’s important not to twist the pipe the sillcock threads onto, since it can be broken. That would lead to a job requiring welding or replacement of an entire length of pipe.

Sillcocks are usually no more than $10, even the anti-siphon style that prevents trapped frozen water from breaking the pipe. They screw back on easily. Just wind on a length of Teflon plumber’s tape in the right direction first. Make sure the tape is stretched tighter not loosened as you wind on the new sillcock.

Done!

Plumbers earn their income. Most are skilled professionals who spent years learning a trade. They come to rescue us in times of crisis or for important projects. But, as thousands of jokes attest, they’re expensive and often not available when you need them. That’s not their fault. Their services are in high demand. Good fortune to them.

Fortunately, there are a whole range of plumbing projects around the home that are well within the reach of the ambitious do-it-yourselfer.

Installing plumbing under tile is at the outer limit of what most will want to attempt. But with patience and the right tools, it’s certainly possible, even common. Like any project it requires planning and care, but nearly anyone can do it.

Other tasks are even easier.

Replacing a garbage disposal unit, or installing an under-the-sink water purifier takes some reading and a bit of patience. It will take an hour or two for most, provided they take care not to break anything. Strong hands to loosen stuck nuts and careful ones to lay Teflon tape correctly are the only major requirements.

Repairing or replacing a toilet might take a bit of muscle, even an assistant or two. But they’re simple mechanisms and - once you know how it’s done - the job is well within reach of the average do-it-yourselfer. Ditto for installing an under-the-sink or on-the-spot water heater. Putting them in the circuit with the existing hot water line can often be done in less than an hour.

No matter what plumbing job you tackle, knowing how and when to use sealants of different types is vital. Knowing the difference between PVC pipe glue and plumber’s putty is essential. Knowing when to use one or the other is mandatory. A facility with plumber’s tape will help prevent the need to re-do a simple job over and over again.

Fortunately, that’s all pretty simple. In many cases, it’s just a matter of following the directions on a package or reading a short tutorial.

Mundane tasks like unclogging a toilet or drain is something practiced by millions of homeowners who never even tackle a home project. Doing it for those rare times when the clog is a little more stubborn takes only a bit of homework.

Some specialty projects take only a small amount more study. Fixing a leaky outdoor spigot is simple. Replacing one with an anti-siphon sillcock is only slightly more difficult.

Knowing a little more about how water can leak or damage your plumbing moves you closer to the realm of the professional plumber. But not everyone has to be a Rembrandt to profit from doing a little art now and again.

Fences can provide privacy, security and even beauty to a property. But one type is used for one basic purpose: to keep pets where they should be. Electric pet fences are the most common and effective type.

There are two basic types of electric pet fence: visible and invisible.

Invisible or hidden types are usually a simple design made of an underground wire and associated hardware. The wire forms a complete loop, which is attached to a source of low voltage and current. The circuit senses when a pet approaches and can provide a mild electric shock via a collar the pet wears. The shock isn’t painful, it merely startles. Sometimes the collar has an integrated sound emitter that adds to the effect.

Dogs and cats both quickly learn to associate the noise and discomfort with the line they approach. Often, that line is made even more obvious by a series of flags staked into the ground to give both animal and owner an indication of where the line is drawn.

Hidden electric pet fences have a balance of pros and cons and where the scales come to rest will vary with individual circumstances.

Some animals (especially if they see something they want to chase) will charge right through, ignoring the collar. Once they’re on the outside of the perimeter, it can be even harder to encourage them to cross back inside. Some fences can take that into account and turn off the circuit once the animal has crossed. With other pets it’s rarely a problem.

The other basic type of electric pet fence provides a physical and visible barrier above the ground. They’re more often used for larger animals, such as horses and cattle.

A more or less standard-looking post and rail style is built, with the rails being made of one or more wires. Some have an electrified wire only at the top, others provide electrification through the whole fence.

Here again the voltage and current are low, so there’s no risk of physical injury. The shock may be uncomfortable, but it’s well below the threshold of pain. The chief effect is similar to that of the hidden-fence-and-collar style. It startles and encourages the animal to move away.

The effectiveness varies, just as it does with the hidden pet fence. But this style has a little more going for it, since it doesn’t just rely on the shock alone to drive the animal back. The physical barrier provides a sturdy perimeter, usually by means of high tensile strength wire and sound posts.

The electrification adds an added benefit: discouraging the animal from pushing through the fence. That does more than just save on costly repairs, it adds an element of safety. A half-down fence is much more likely to injure them.

Hidden electric pet fences are typically less expensive than above-the-ground types, since they’re nothing more than a single wire and some electronic gear. Above the ground fencing offers additional security. Which is appropriate depends on your animal and layout.

Anti-siphon spigots are the homeowner’s hero for those who live in cold winter climates. For an extra dollar or two you can avoid having to replace an outdoor spigot due to low temperatures. Here’s why…

In areas where winter temperatures get below 20F/-7C, it’s possible for trapped water in the spigot and sillcock to freeze and expand. The figure is approximate. It’s certainly possible for that same water to freeze at 32F/0C, but heat from the house helps lower the ‘danger point’ temperature somewhat.

That ice now presents two possible problems, similar to those that cause pipes under the house to sometimes burst in winter.

The ice takes up more room than the water did. You can test that by filling a cup exactly to the rim with water then putting it into the freezer. You’ll note that the ice sticks slightly above the rim. That extra volume is no problem when the top is open. But when the water/ice has nowhere to expand, it raises the pressure on the container. Raise it enough and you can break a seal.

The major effect, though, is due to the fact that the pressure builds up beyond the ice block. Air and water have nowhere to go. The air is compressible, but any trapped water will create high pressure on the internal parts of the sillcock and spigot. Even strong metals, made more brittle by the cold anyway, can be split. Plastic and cold-hardened rubber are doomed.

When the weather warms again and everything melts, you now have a spigot with a crack. If it doesn’t leak spontaneously, turning it on will guarantee a drip or worse.

An anti-siphon spigot contains an additional mechanism beyond the ordinary outdoor water faucet. Hoses attach like normal, but inside and out they have features to prevent the spigot from bursting due to ice blockage and expansion.

A few things help prevent the anti-siphon spigot from cracking like an ordinary one.

The seal/valve that actually shuts off the water flow is further back in the sillcock - inside the house, which is warmer. That helps prevent cold temperatures from reaching the water. More helpful still is the ability of the sillcock to withdraw water away from areas where ice buildup can be a problem. It keeps the water from remaining near seals that can be frozen and cracked by low temperatures.

But most importantly, the design of the sillcock/spigot allows for the relief of pressure for any ice that does form. It gives a place for expanding water to go when pressure builds up in other parts of the sillcock/spigot.

Even so, in warm conditions and with normal use, it’s possible for anti-siphon spigots to leak out the top pressure-relieving spout or elsewhere. Kits with replacement seals and other internal parts are available for a few dollars. For those who prefer to repair rather than replace, or if the other end of the sillcock is difficult to access, these kits can save money and time.

Chain link fences today come in a variety that will surprise anyone who hasn’t looked lately.

Traditional chain link fences are a familiar sight. Made of galvanized steel, the alloy is coated with powdered zinc. The zinc gives the material protection and its dusty aluminum-like look and the steel provides a sturdy barrier.

Even in the traditional style, chain link comes in a range of gauges, different thicknesses designed for varied applications. The lightest is usually 13 and heavier gauges run through 12, 11 and so on up to 6. Few homeowners will need the thickest gauge but some building a dog kennel fence may want to consider it. Most will find that anything between 9-11 gauge is fine.

The galvanizing may be done before or after the mesh is created, giving the two types their names: GBW (Galvanized Before Weaving) and GAW (Galvanized After Weaving). The latter tends to be a little less expensive, but the former has the advantage that potentially less steel is exposed to the elements, minimizing the odds of rusting. GAW also tends to increase the tensile strength of the fence, but for many applications the differences are minor.

More contemporary designs offer chain link fences in a range of colors. A polyvinyl chloride coating turns chain link into red, green, blue, yellow, brown, black or white. That allows the builder to integrate the fence a little better into the home or garden design without spray painting. It also acts as an additional barrier against rust.

There are three different methods of vinyl coating the fabric (as the mesh is called). The first, called extruded, wraps the wire in a vinyl jacket. The second is known as extruded bonded and actually adheres to the core. Thermally fused vinyl coating is generally only needed for commercial applications, though home use is possible.

Over time nicks in the vinyl will introduce some degradation in the appearance as the fence is subjected to accidental scrapes with a garden hoe, bicycles, dog claws and others. A little spray paint in the appropriate color can keep that problem to an insignificant level for years.

The final consideration is the mesh or ‘diamond’ size. The usual range is from 1 3/8 inch – 2 3/8 inch, but larger or smaller diamonds are available. To simply create a barrier or mark off a section of garden or lawn, the larger size is fine. It’s still very sturdy and generally cheaper. To keep out cats, small dogs and rabbits a smaller mesh can be very useful.

To prevent access to the garden or lawn by gophers, moles and other burrowing animals even the smallest normal mesh may not do. Lining the lower section with some material can easily solve the problem, though. Integrated woven slats, a sheet of chicken wire and other methods will prevent access if the fence goes underground about a foot. Slats at the base also provide additional privacy.

Taking on the task of implementing the best home improvement projects for your home can become time consuming and expensive especially if multiple projects are planned. While the time and money involved in making the best home improvement projects can range from high to low, the additional increase in value to your home is well worth the effort.

Benefits of Best Home Improvement Projects

Whether you plan to live in the home or resell it, improving the value is a positive step for any homeowner. If reselling the home is an option, not only is the price a factor to potential buyers but also the condition of the home. A home that is in excellent condition and has been upgraded with new and improved materials and has had amenities added will make the home much more attractive to new buyers plus the cost of the best home improvement projects can be factored in when determining a sale price.

Implementing the Best Home Improvement Projects

Knowing what the best home improvement projects are for your home requires, in some situations, an expert opinion and contacting professionals in specific fields to help you find home improvement projects relevant to your needs will start you in the right direction. Check the yellow pages, online websites, local newspapers and community flyers for information. Many companies or individual contractors will give free estimates.
If you will be doing any of the improvements yourself, whether you’re experienced in making home improvements or a novice, having a good home improvement book to explain how to do the best home improvement projects is an asset.

Utilizing Experts

Some improvements are best left to licensed experts such as electricians, plumbers, contractors and landscapers/tree cutters. These types of projects would include such things as the need to replace fuse boxes and faulty wiring, rewiring work of any kind, replacing pipes, tearing off and replacing a roof, installing drywall, laying tile, installing a water heater or a central air conditioning system or having tall trees removed or trimmed. Not only do these experts have the knowledge and the tools necessary to complete the best home improvement projects, the work done comes with a warranty and a guarantee.

Additional Information

Check with your local zoning office to find out what permits are required before starting any home improvement project. In some cases, the contractors will get the necessary permit but for other projects, especially those you are doing yourself such as adding a room or replacing the roof requires the homeowner to purchase and post a permit.

A lot of people are starting to like the idea of having a fireplace in their home or even a few of them. Fireplaces not only help on heating costs but they are pleasant to look at and become a nice focal point for a room. They can quickly and easily spice up any room they are in and are places to set some photos or decorations on. Maybe even a nice plant or two as it is really up to the homeowner. Many people are finding that having a fireplace or two is well worth the money they invest into them.

But because of the way a lot of people like to decorate their homes, the old fashioned looking fireplaces are no longer appealing to most people. For the general public, the modern fireplace is what is most preferred. The modern fireplace adds that same touch of class but in a slightly different package is all. When the people who are used to the old fashioned fireplaces think of a modern fireplace, they believe they would not like it. But once it is seen in person, most people tend to change their minds and begin to see themselves owning their very own modern fireplace.

Installing The Safe Way

If you want to install a gas or electric modern fireplace and have never done it before, it may be well worth your safety to call in a professional. Having someone experienced do the work will ensure that there are no problems down the line. After all, gas and electric are no fun to mess with if you are unsure of yourself. If you are purchasing a real flame modern fireplace that uses the gel cans, then you can assemble that yourself and get it started in no time. Also, those are typically portable so you can also move them from room to room all by yourself.

Also, make sure that whatever work or prep work you do yourself, you are taking your time with. It has been said that your work is only as good as your preparation stage and that holds true when installing or putting together a modern fireplace. Take your time and read the instructions so that you will get a lot of good use out of your new modern fireplace. You and your family will enjoy and appreciate the time and effort that went into the project and all of the money you put into it for them.

When you’re thinking about doing a home improvement project, you probably envision going to one of the big named stores, such as Lowes or Home Depot. However, those stores often have higher prices than many of the mom and pop shops or even home improvement outlet stores. These home improvement outlet stores can provide you with everything you need without breaking your wallet like any of the big named stores will. There are lots of home improvement outlet stores, just as there are many huge, big named stores that offer home improvement tools, supplies and more.

Shop Around

Don’t just stop into your local home improvement outlet store and start shopping. It would be better to compare prices, especially with food and gas prices the way they are today. Wouldn’t you like to get as many home improvement tools, supplies and everything else you need while also saving money? Of course you would. So whether you’re shopping at Lowes, Home Depot, one of the other big named stores, or a home improvement outlet store; compare prices so that you can save as much money as possible.

Bigger Is Not Always Better

You may be thinking that the big named stores are big because they’re better. That’s just not the case, however. Home improvement outlet stores are often staffed by people who are more helpful and more knowledgeable. These people truly care about you and your needs. Because they may not get as much business, or do as much advertising, as the other big names, they need and respect your business. So they’ll often go that extra mile in order to satisfy you. That’s just one of the many benefits of shopping at a home improvement outlet store.

Improving Your Home

When you stop into a home improvement outlet store, you should already have your project in mind. Are you building a new addition onto your home? Are you adding on or are you redoing a certain room? However, sometimes it’s fun to just come up with a project on the spot as you spy a certain item on the shelf at the home improvement outlet store. Your projects that you want to do are up to your know how, your budget and what the home improvement outlet stores have in stock. Have fun and congratulations on your motivation to improve your home. You’ll increase your property value and you’ll also feel as though you just moved into a brand new dream home.

There is a lot to love about fireplaces since they bring us so much warmth and comfort. It is hard to imagine a cold winters night without being snuggled up in front of one. Well, even cool summer nights are fun in front of the inviting fireplace. But what if you do not have one in your home at all? Then you should think about purchasing or building one as it will add a great deal of appeal to your home’s overall appearance and style. This is an investment that could have an excellent turn around for you in the end.

Knowing how to build a fireplace is important though if you are going to attempt it yourself. Also, knowing a little something about cutting and laying brick is important if it is a brick fireplace you want. Or you could always go for a wood fireplace mantel, but you would still need a different material such as brick on the inside because of flames. Even the ventless propane fireplaces will need bricks in the layout. So if you have never done this type of project before, make sure you learn how to build a fireplace before you are in the middle of it all.

Getting Assistance

If you have never tackled a project like this before, you must seek help so that you don’t get hurt and you do not waste money on materials that get messed up due to lack of experience. Knowing someone like a friend or a family member who knows how to build a fireplace is a great start. This is because the friend or family member will more than likely help you out for free instead of charging you like a professional would. Then again, sometimes it is worth the money of having a professional come in.

If that is not an option though and you are simply stern on not hiring outside help, then you need to make sure to read up on some books and Internet articles about how to build a fireplace. Start with the Internet as there is a ton of information just waiting to be read and you may even luck out with finding some clear cut instructions and even blueprints for learning how to build a fireplace. In the end, the time and effort you put into researching the project will pay off and show through the quality of work that you produce.
